What can the schools do to defend democracy? Should they preach a specific political doctrine? I believe they should not. If they are able to teach young people to have a critical mind and a socially oriented attitude, they will have done all that is necessary. Students will then become equipped with those qualities which are prerequisite for citizens living in a healthy democratic society.

What didn't exist for us is the concept of tomorrow. As in - "we'll get around to that tomorrow." Oh no we won't. Tomorrow is too late. Tomorrow is unacceptable. Tomorrow is the lazy man's great labor saving device.

"Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt." When I was middle-aged, as six of my seven children have since become, I said I wanted that for my epitaph. I've always had a sort of insatiable curiosity about things, everything, electronics for a while, then art, then art history and architecture, all sorts of stuff. When I get interested in something, I become totally absorbed by it, and I always run out of physical energy before my curiosity is satisfied. I never intended to become a businessman. That was the furthest thing from my mind. I thought I'd be an inventor or architect or designer. I was interested in visual things, and I was always interested in ideas and comfortable with them -- in everything from calculus to architecture.
