"If a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing well." This is one of the most wasteful and destructive sayings I know. In theory it sounds good, but it makes people feel guilty every time they can't do something well. So they avoid many activities they would otherwise enjoy and might eventually master.
I think we should change this saying to "If a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing badly." That doesn't, of course mean that it can't or shouldn't be done well, it just gives us permission to go through the cumbersome process of being awkward at it for a time.
